Are Electronic Cigarettes Safe?

Okay, so there’s this big debate going on right now about how e-cigarettes might not be that safe and that carcinogens may be in them, etc etc.

These are obviously coming from people and organizations that don’t want to see electronic cigarettes get any further than they already are on the consumer market. They are coming from the FDA, and people, and as I said, organizations that just don’t want to see electronic cigarettes succeed and they want to push it away as much as possible.

Let me explain to you the arguments and the facts and you can make up your mind for yourself.

Now, one thing the FDA does not want, and they have literally banned electronic cigarette companies from saying this in their marketing. They cannot say that an electronic cigarette is a safer alternative than a real cigarette. They can’t say it! They will get in huge trouble with the FDA and the government. Here’s the thing. I don’t think that’s accurate. I think that electronic cigarettes are safer. I’m going to tell you logical reasons why, the facts, and you can decide if you agree with me or not.

A real cigarette has four thousand chemicals, sixty of which are known carcinogens. So we already know that the real cigarette is dangerous. There’s no question about that. We’ve known that for a long time. The real question is, how dangerous, if at all, is an electronic cigarette?

Well, an electronic cigarette has three things in it. Not four thousand, three. Three chemicals. The Korean Electronic Cigarette Association conducted a test of both a real cigarette and an electronic cigarette. Using a machine, they took 8 puffs off an e-cigarette and 8 puffs off a real cigarette and they tested what was in them. They found that there are three chemicals in an electronic cigarette. Three! Not four thousand. Three!

  1. Nicotine. (Which, duh! We know that’s in there. It’s supposed to be in there)
  2. Glycerin
  3. Propylene glycol

Now, the two besides nicotine, the other two are very, very common chemicals that are in many, many things we consume on a daily basis such as beer, bacon, and fish. These are known to be safe, normal chemicals or compounds that are in normal things we consume every day. The only other thing, which is nicotine, which is in an electronic cigarette, that is not necessarily safe. The reason nicotine is not safe is because it does constrict your blood vessels, cause your heart rate to go up, and increase your blood pressure. That is the drug that you are using when you smoke a cigarette or an e-cigarette. They do have non-nicotine e-cigarettes. So in that case, I guess you could say, in my opinion anyway, that it would be totally safe.

The deal is that you have three chemicals. One is nicotine, which is considered sort of harmful. The other two are fine. Four thousand, sixty of which are harmful. Now, how can you sit here and tell me that this, an electronic cigarette, is not safer than a real cigarette? How can you tell me that? These are the facts folks!

If you want to know more about what is in a real cigarette I do have a post on the Top 10 Nastiest Things Found in a Cigarette. You can check that out and find out more about what is really in that cigarette you are smoking. But in this post, I’m just going over the comparison on safety.

Now, one other thing I’d like to point out is that there was a statement that was said that they found antifreeze in electronic cigarettes. Let me go ahead and clear this up. Propylene glycol is one component that’s used in a non-toxic version of antifreeze. They took antifreeze and they said, how can we make this non-toxic? Oh, we’ll use a safe compound like propylene glycol and we’ll make it non-toxic. So that’s the real story, folks. There’s no antifreeze in electronic cigarettes. It’s just that one chemical was used because it’s so safe, to make a non-toxic version of antifreeze. Don’t get all weirded out by that statement if you heard it in the media or in the press.

What I want to know is, what do you guys think? You have heard the facts. You’ve heard my opinion. But what about your opinion? Do you feel that we should not be able to say that electronic cigarettes are safer than regular cigarettes? Do you think they aren’t safer? Do you think we just don’t know? What are your thoughts? Listened to BBC World Service talking about ecigs this morning and as a long time, heavy smoker figured I read up on them. The point both the BBC and Dan makes was the same; we know for a fact that cigarettes are really harmful. The BBC pointed out 5 million deaths worldwide are attributable to smoking every year, with 50% of us likely to die younger as a result but ‘officially’ we don’t yet know on ecigs.

They only question out there is that, (other than nicotine) do the 2 other chemicals suddenly become dangerous if inhaled rather than consumed?

Well, compare the risks of 60+ known carcinogens in addition to thousands of chemicals and I rapidly move to a no-brainer conclusion.

I cannot see, literally for the life of me, how inhaling these 3 chemicals combined could possibly be worse than what I am doing with regular cigarettes.

Thanks Dan, and keep up the good work. For many of us who do feel trapped by cigarettes, this might just be the key that unlocks the door. Finally, the BBC suggested ecigs may well turn put to be the #1 public health benefit of the 21st century.

They are definitely better than an analog, you also have to consider the fire hazard. The FDA and other Government agencies don’t care about the safety anyway, IT IS THE MONEY THEY ARE LOSING ON ANALOG SALES!!!! E-cigs SHOULD BE marketed as a stop smoking device.

Only this morning the newspaper reported than an e-cigarette blew up (like a firework had been thrown) in a pub and the barmaid’s arms were singed and her dress burnt, also the device was still SMOKING so much that it burnt the floor. How can you say that e-cigarettes are totally safe and not a fire hazard? That’s the problem with allowing these devices in enclosed places, THEY ARE A FIRE HAZARD! Not to mention the nicotine in them, which everybody knows is harmful.
